What is organic food?
Organic food is basically unadulterated or “natural” produce. It is grown engaging farming methods that preserve and replenish the fertility of the soil, by working in harmony with nature, instead of against it – in other words, it is a holistic approach to food production. Pesticides are permitted, so long as they are not man-made.
It is also worth mentioning, organic food is grown without modern synthetic inputs, such as chemical pesticides or herbicides, growth hormones, ionizing radiation, genetic modifiers and without sewage sludge fertilizers, which regularly contain extremely toxic “recycled” heavy metals and other pollutants.
To be categorised as “legally” organic, the foodstuff has to be certified as such. Organic certification and sustaining that certification is pricey. For example, the standards for organic food are laid down in European law and are carefully monitored and it takes around five years for a farm to fully move over to organic practices. Organic food is also more work intensive, since the farmers do not use pesticides, chemical fertilizers or drugs.
Processed organic produce most often only contains organic ingredients. If non-organic ingredients are included, at least a certain percentage of the food’s complete ingredients must be organic and any non-organically produced ingredients are conditional upon various agricultural requirements.
Why choose organic food?
Organic foods are all about environmental conservation (pesticides and insecticides have been proven to have a huge effect on the global ecosystem) and the elimination of chemicals from our food for a healthier way of life, i.e. organic nutrition. Food manufacturers frequently inject the foodstuff they sell with chemicals and preservatives, in order to prolong their ‘”shelf life”.
As a result, not only does buying organic food products help to protect the environment, it is arguably better for the health of those buying the products, because organic foods are grown without the use of toxic chemicals, pesticides and other synthetic compounds and so their natural goodness is maintained.
It is argued that such foodstuff will also have more vitamins, minerals, nutrients and enzymes and will taste better than intensively-farmed produce. Organic food is widely thought to be beneficial for your health and providing your body with a regular supply is liable to have a beneficial effect on your well-being.
Animal welfare is another notable aspect of organic food production, because animals bred through organic means have to be kept in the open-air for a minimum amount of time and there are also guidelines for the basic care of the animals. regular use of antibiotics on animals is also prohibited, mitigating concerns about the associated risks to human health from their common level of use by non-organic farmers.
