Will it Make a Difference if I Buy a .info Domain Instead of a .com?
I’ve heard both sides of this controversy from various marketers over the years, but primarily the answer most would give to that question is yes, it does matter. That for some reason, Google gives more “appreciation” to a .com or even a .org domain than to a .info (or even .net) domain.
The people that have told me this say that it is obvious to see this is true because when you look at the search results you receive when you enter something into a search engine, the top sites are almost always going to be .com or .org.
Yes, this is generally accurate, but I have another idea that you must think about when deciding which extension you are going to purchase.
There are many, many, many more .com and .org sites on the Internet than there are .info. This fact on it’s own could explain why the search results generally have .com and .org domain names in their page one listings. This does not mean that it is not a possibility that the search engines prefer .com or .org, I am simply bringing up a point. That is that .com and .org domain extensions should be in the top of the search results most of the time, there are 10′s, even 100′s of thousands more websites with a .com or .org domain extension.
I myself have way more .com websites. I prefer those because when people enter domain names into their address bar they usually to type .com. So, by just using a .com you can ensure they go to your website. If the website you were looking for in a .com has a .info available and you buy it, then as the person goes to type it into their address bar, chances are that unless they were really attentive, they will be entering in .com. Therefore, rather than going to your website, they would land on someone else’s.
I want to point out that I do have some .info extensions however and as far as a SEO stand point I have discovered that they rank in the search engines equally as well as a .com website. So, for SEO purposes it does not really seem to matter which extension you purchase. The search engine optimization side comes down more to your keywords and in-bound links than to the domain extension you choose.
Therefore, when purchasing your domain it comes down to your preference. Do you care ifthey accidentally type in .com rather than .info (or even .net)? How you answer this question will help you chose which domain name extension you buy.
