For instance, the current oil spill is general news since it affected so many countries, or possibly the past recession, since it affected more than half of the nations in the whole world. If you presume that, then you are right with what you regard as general news.

For a much better meaning, general news is a type of news that is created for the masses. This means, everyone can connect with it. As an author, it is hard to write all-purpose news that is since you must analyze on subjects that not only people in a certain area can relate to, but people all over the world can be concerned about. The two given above are obvious, since several countries are involved. However, it is not a daily news that a bank mishandles its funds, or when an oil spill happens, threatening almost half of the population of the world’s marine living beings.

So, as a columnist who is tasked to compose general news, you have to think carefully on what you are going to deliver, and you need to do extensive research first. This is since your viewers is the entire world, there is no room for mistake, and if you cause one, or write something that is incorrect, then it will surely affect the daily paper that you are writing for.

All in all, when writing news and answers, you should be wary of two very simple entities, your subject and relation to the entire world. So, whatever occurred in Hawaii that isn’t something most important isn’t valuable for general news.
