Pest and vermin control in Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester has seen a brisk start this year which is somewhat unexpected given the somewhat cold (weather of this last winter|winter of 2009/10}.
Pest and Vermin controllers were kept busy with the usual town centre rodent calls throughout the winter of 2009/10, but the relatively cold early spring has already seen some ant infestations coming in.
The fairly wet summers of the last few years were not to the taste of the hymenoptera (bees, ants, sawflies and wasps) but 2010 looks like it is going to be a active year for ant callouts.
Regularly ants nest under the floors of buildings and inside cavity walls causing a lot of foraging ants to enter food store areas.
However it is at the annual mating time when they can be most distressing as they produce winged males and queens which then fly off to mate.
The appearance of many thousands of these flying ants inside homes can be traumatic in the extreme.
A somewhat new pest was quite prevalant in the Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire area last season, the Varied Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbasci).
It was not common for pest operatives in the North West to encounter these pests until recent times but they seemed to arrive from nowhere in recent times and already this year has seen reports of varied carpet beetle in large numbers.
These beetles have a similar life cycle to moths their larvae, known as woolly bears devour natural fibres and can do a great deal of damage to carpets and all fabrics. They are a difficult and tricky pest to remove.
Those who work in in pest control note that Bed Bugs are carrying on their return in the Lancashire, Manchester and Cheshire area, regularly arriving as hitch-hikers in the suitcases of home-coming travellers.
Often the first reaction of unlucky people who realise that they have been infested with these horrible,blood-sucking pests is to burn the old beds and get.
This is an unneccesary mistake as despite their name bed bugs do not just stay in beds and in an infested bedroom will be found anywhere within around five yards of the bed, in cupboards, drawers etc, even in electrical sockets and the new beds will be instantly re-infested.
Most people mix up bed bugs with dust mites which are not visible to the naked eye.They both a different form of pest control
They dine solely on blood which they take from their sleeping hosts. People often associate bed bugs with dirty conditions but nothing could be less accurate, they do not need dirt, they eat you!
