1. Allocate A Specified Chunk Of Time For Consuming Info On The Internet
Wasting hour after hour of your valuable and irreplaceable time on activities that shouldn’t take up more than 30 minutes a day has to come to an end.
What I’m referring to is everything on the Web that you do to consume information – reading emails and messages, checking Twitter, digg and Facebook, reading the news, blogs – everything!
Give yourself half an hour to an hour each day to do nothing but revel in it, take care of it, or however you choose to look at it. But once you’ve used up your time, don’t go back to it at all until later in the day or evening, and only if you’ve accomplished a number of other tasks.
Keep these things in their place and quit letting them control your life!
Give up checking this stuff every 5 minutes. Not only is that a momentum-killer, but chances are, the rest of the world isn’t going to sit there twidding their thumbs waiting for your next Twitter update.
2. Take Control Of Your Inbox
Managing your email is a massive topic, to the extent that a whole book could be written on this subject (there have been, many of them), but these would likely be the highlights:
Answer any emails that can be replied to quickly (and by quickly, I mean in less than a couple of minutes) immediately.
Don’t make your replies any longer than they need be. Lose the ’small talk’ and get to the point (but maintain sincerity). As much as you don’t like writing lengthy emails, the person receiving one probably likes reading them a lot less.
If you haven’t replied to any email after a month, then delete it. If you hold on to them for any longer, then every time you see them, you’ll just end up feeling guilty. And guess what – guilt is a guaranteed action-killer, so by getting rid of the emails, you’ll be getting rid of the guilt too!
3. Work As Disconnected As Possible
This means, close your office door (use a Do Not Disturb sign if necessary), turn off your phone (you can do it, I know you can), and close your instant messaging program.
You have got to get momentum on your side, because when you get that ‘flow’ going, you are able to take action much faster, with much better results.
So, when you’re working, eliminate all distractions!
