Symptoms to take Notice of with Dry Macular Degeneration
If you are suffering from blurred vision, hallucinations or patchy spots in your straight line of vision, and you are over the age of 50, consult your doctor because you may be suffering from Dry Macular Degeneration. This eye disorder is caused when small or medium drusen (yellow fat-like deposits on your retina) form together in masses causing impaired, blurry vision. Your peripheral vision is not usually affected. Dry Macular Degeneration usually progresses in stages. The first stage is when there are only a few drusen on your retina and symptoms have not surfaced. When the second stage hits, symptoms become more enhanced, but you are still able to function on a somewhat normal basis, perhaps requiring more light in lowly lit areas to help you with reading and working etc. In the advanced stages of this disorder, however, your symptoms have gotten progressively worse drastically altering your daily lifestyle. While Dry Macular Degeneration will not cause total blindness, however, your will have to completely adapt your lifestyle. Daily events that once seemed mundane will have to be changed such as reading, driving and working.
Researchers believe that Dry Macular Degeneration is an inherited disease genetically passed down. Those who are over the age of 50 years old, women, smokers and who have lightly colored eyes are more susceptible to this disorder. There is no cure and no way to reverse your symptoms. It is not uncommon for only of your eyes to be infected originally, to which your lifestyle does not have to be completely altered and your non-affected eye can compensate for the damaged one. Both eyes eventually will be affected however, but usually Dry Macular Degeneration is slow to progress and at different times in both eyes.
